We have a wide range of fuel pumps, for both internal and external use. For internal we have for surge tanks or built into the fuel tank, and for external, you can get fuel pumps that are mounted outside the fuel tank. We also have fuel pumps for EFI/injection and carburetors. 

The purpose of a fuel pump is to provide the engine with plenty of fuel, and today you can get very efficient fuel pumps that can provide fuel for up to 1000 horsepowers. Today's fuel pumps are powered by electricity from the running of the engine, and the fuel is led to the engine via fuel hoses. For that reason it's important to pick hoses that are large enough, to be able to deliver enough fuel for the engine. The same goes for the fuel return hose, which needs to be able to handle the excess fuel and return it to the fuel tank.   

How often should you change the fuel pump?

A fuel pump becomes worn and loses performance over time, often about every 200.000 kilometers. Once the fuel pump becomes worn, the car will get insufficient fuel at peak usage, which can damage the engine and overall performance, and its a lot cheaper to replace a fuel pump, then the entire engine.

Make sure to empty and clean the fuel tank, as a fuel pump will need replacing very quickly if it has to run with a dirty fuel tank. 

Replacing a fuel pump

If you have access to a decent-sized tool kit and a basic understanding of how to use them. It should be a job you can do yourself, as it requires no special tools. If the fuel pump is located in the fuel tank, you can generally access it by removing the rear seats in the car, and remove the cover to the fuel pump. After that, you remove the fuel pump console and replace the pump. It's recommended to also replace the flex pipe, that's located between the pump and the top cover. The job can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 4-5 hours depending on the location of the fuel tank and pump, and how easy it is to gain access. 

Choosing the right fuel pump

They are all easy to mount, and the only big difference between them is where the connection is located. If you need an external fuel pump, then the Bosch 044 fuel pump is a really solid choice, and we also have the fitting required to mount it.
